Tsinghua University, one of the prestigious and selective in China, is offering Portuguese as an optional subject in the academic year of 2020/21 along with 33 other universities in China.

Given the evolution of trade, Tsinghua's commitment reflects China's growing need to train better staff to work with Portuguese-language countries, which in 2018 alone amounted to €131,206 million, an increase of 25.31% year-on-year.

China has become one of the main investors in Portugal by buying stakes in large companies of banking, energy, health, and insurance, and thousands of their citizens having bought homes to obtain the Golden Visa.

In total, more than 1,500 Chinese students now attend courses in Portuguese.
